Specialist conservation architects and building consultancy
practice, Architecton of Bristol, are helping the Trustees to
prepare detailed designs and specifications for the
refurbishment work required at the Tithe Barn, The work
will be used to secure a detailed final cost budget and to apply
for planning permission and listed building consent in the
Autumn of 2007.
The works proposed will be entirely sympathetic towards
preserving the heritage features of the building. Where
appropriate traditional materials and construction methods will
be utilised in keeping with the original building.
Although the internal finishes and appearance of the barn is
poor, it's main fabric remains in good condition for a building
of such great age (over 500 years). The external walls of
substantial rubble construction show only limited sign of
structural distress. A high proportion pf the pan and
double roman clay tiles covering the roof can be reused.
Local areas of damp and rainwater penetration need to be
repaired. The original roof timbers have been subject to
worm attack over the years but remain in sound condition.
Services to the building, including heating and electrical
services will need complete replacement. It is also
proposed to add well designed new space to the building to
provide upgraded kitchen and toilet facilities. External
works will introduce improved hard and soft landscaping to
relieve the current bleak and sterile setting created by the
unrelenting tarmac (former school playground). All works
will ensure full disabled access and we will a deaf loop for the
hard of hearing.
We hope that when completed the building will offer a number of
adaptable spaces which can be used for a variety of purposes:-

Our draft business plan assumes that the Victoria Hall will be
let to a user such as a community based nursery and that the
converted outbuildings (former school toilet block) will be let
as a small unit workspace. The income generated by these
lettings will help fund the overall building maintenance costs
in the future and help subsidise community use of the other
spaces.
Detailed plans will be displayed on this site for public
consultation once they have been finalised so please bookmark
this page and come back.
